Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

After testing dozens of recipes, this is the chocolate chip cookie that has earned a permanent spot in my kitchen. The secret? Brown butter and a 30-minute rest for the dough.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter: melt in saucepan over medium heat, stirring until golden and nutty. Cool 10 minutes.
  2. Mix brown butter with both sugars. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
  3. Fold in flour, baking soda, and salt until just combined. Stir in chocolate chips.
  4. Rest dough 30 minutes at room temperature.
  5. Preheat oven to 375F. Scoop dough onto lined baking sheet, 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake 10-12 minutes until edges are set but centers still look slightly underdone.
  7. Cool on pan 5 minutes before transferring.
